A second child has died in New York City of flu-related illness, as the city and nation cope with the worst flu season in almost a decade, the city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said on Monday.

The child was given the medication after showing symptoms of the illness, but she still had trouble breathing a day later in her family's apartment in LeFrak City in Corona, the sources said.

Police said her parents tried to perform CPR and officers tried to help, as well.

The city's health department says an 8-year-old girl from Queens died on Monday after being rushed to the hospital.

Flu season runs from October through May, but Bassett says there has been an early surge this year.

This year's season is the worst since the swine flu pandemic in 2009, according to state health officials. No details have been released about the second child, other than saying it was a pediatric patient from New York City.

Bassett said that people who are sick with the flu or flu-like symptoms should stay home, noting they are likely covered by sick leave as required by the city's Paid Sick Leave Act.

In a statement it said: "The tragic death of a child due to the flu is a reminder of the devastating effects this illness can have on people of all ages". So far 6.5 percent of all clinic and ER visits this season have been flu-related.

Neighbors were shocked - and also anxious about the flu spreading.

In one Atlanta, Georgia, suburb, 50 school bus drivers and monitors called in sick, forcing staff at the Coal Mountain Elementary School in Cumming to drive the buses to get children to school, officials said.

"Sad. My two young ones have gotten the flu shot".
