Ahn among Russians seeking Pyeongchang spots

  • Ski Mountaineering is one possible new sport on the Winter Olympic programme

The IOC confirmed that only athletes who have "fulfilled the pre-games testing requirements", including the IRP's criteria, "as well as the required reanalysis from stored samples", would be allowed to compete at the Games.

CAS says a hearing is likely Wednesday in Pyeongchang.

"We expected that the CAS decision would dispel all suspicions against the athletes", Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) restricted Russian Federation from Pyeongchang over "precise control" of the counter doping framework in Sochi four years back however left the entryway open for competitors with no history of doping to contend as neutrals.

Russian officials requested invites for 13 athletes and two coaches from that group of 28, but were turned down by the International Olympic Committee, which has also rejected other Russians citing new evidence of possible drug use in the past.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said last week that there was "insufficient evidence" of anti-doping violations against 28 Russian athletes.

It noted that CAS had yet to provide a "full reasoning" for overturning the bans and that there was evidence about the athletes that had not been available to the Oswald Commission, which conducted the investigation into Russian doping.

In a statementexternal link released on Monday, the International Olympic Committee said its move against the CAS decision was because the "full reasoning for these decisions had not been made public".

As well as short-track speedskating legend Ahn, the 32 include world cross-country skiing champion Sergei Ustyugov and world biathlon champion Anton Shipulin.

Russian Federation was suspended from Pyeongchang after the discovery of a systemic doping conspiracy culminating at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics - where, as the host nation, they topped the medals table.

"We very much regret it".

Meanwhile, Russia's Olympic Athletes Commission expressed "huge disappointment" over the IOC's decision not to invite to Pyeongchang the 15 Russian athletes and staff whose life bans for doping were lifted, a report from Moscow added. The invitations have not however been extended to a number of leading Russian athletes.

However, it appeared to be an unpopular opinion from Pound, who along with Britain's Adam Pengilly was the only delegate to abstain from an otherwise unanimous vote of confidence in the IOC's handling of the Russian suspension.

But on Tuesday, CAS told AFP that 32 Russians would launch a fresh appeal to compete, including the highly decorated Korean-Russian speed skater Victor An.

"The IOC, we would never have expected this", Bach said as uncertainty lingers over the Russian athletes.

On Monday, the Olympic governing body denied invitations to 13 Russian athletes and two coaches to the 2018 Games.
