  • Apple halving iPhone X production in Q1

The tech giant told suppliers it would cut its production target for the phone to 20 million units, following slower-than-expected sales in the year-end holiday shopping period in Europe, the US and China, the Nikkei reported Monday.

A report today claims that Apple is cutting its iPhone X production targets in half in response to 'disappointing holiday season sales'. Originally, around 40 million iPhone X units were set to be made over the next three months, but apparently this has now been knocked down to 20 million units.

The latest report states that the iPhone X will continue its production run until at least 2019.

Best not get too attached to the iPhone X branding, though, as there's a chance the next-generation model will leave the factory under a different moniker.

KGI also said that only 13 million units of Apple iPhone X will ship in second quarter of 2018. Nikkei also mentioned that production of the iPhone X faced a components shortage in the wake of its launch, so production can now start to slow as inventory begins to rise.

Coming to the design aesthetics of the new iPhone, it might be a almost full screen design similar to the iPhone X from a year ago with no home button and a notch for TrueDepth sensors.

Pricing on this year's iPhone X would seem lower than what it was previously because of the iPhone X Plus possibly releasing, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

An analyst says the new model's disappointing sales could lead to the phone being cancelled - with production stopping as soon as this summer. Being an affordable model in the new range, the LCD version of the iPhone X will have features such as and support but lack and come with an aluminium frame. And finally, it will be using an LCD screen instead of OLED. Last year it broke from tradition and released two lines of iPhone, with the more-expensive iPhone X a major redesign on previous years and boasting new features such as face-tracking technology.

Shares of Apple were down by around 0.5 percent in US premarket trade.

Apple will report its fiscal first-quarter earnings results later this week.
