  • Microsoft launches new education PCs and apps from $189

The new announcements build on the momentum established by Microsoft's major school technology push of May 2017, which saw the introduction of the Surface Laptop, Windows 10 S and Teams for the classroom, said the executive.

According to the analyst firm Futuresource, Google's low-priced Chromebooks captured 59.8% of the laptop market for K-12 education, compared to 22.3% of the Microsoft Windows devices in the third-quarter of 2017.

For the past three years, Microsoft has watched as Google's Chromebooks have eaten away at the low-priced Windows PC market. JP is a Portuguese device maker that Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Windows and Devices group, described as one of the company's "largest partners in emerging markets", in a January 22 announcement.

The company today unveiled new devices and software tools aimed at winning over more schools to Windows 10, which is estimated to have a market share of 22 percent in the U.S. K-12 segment compared with Chromebooks' almost 60 percent. The cheapest of the new laptops is a the $189 Lenovo 100e, equipped with Intel's Apollo Lake-series Celeron processor. For emerging markets, JP will sell the Classmate Leap T303 notebook, starting at $199, and the Trigono V401 2-in-1, starting at $299. Microsoft's CVP Yusuf Mehdi says the new devices are for those who "don't want to compromise on Chromebooks". All four are spill resistant, ruggedized for students, and promise long battery life to avoid having wires all over the classroom.

Finally, with Mixed Reality, Microsoft will be working with Pearson to roll out a curriculum that works on both HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality immersive VR headsets. 10% off the HoloLens still doesn't make the device affordable at all for most schools, though. Chromebooks have acquired a strong presence in the education sector, a movement Microsoft began to respond to a year ago. This year, Microsoft will continue expanding the tools on Office for its education customers.

Microsoft also announced a slew of new and improved personalized learning tools this week - from built-in dictation technology to expanded functionality of the Immersive Reader. He included changes that Microsoft has made to MS Teams, a communication and classroom-management platform; and inTune for Education, a cloud-based app and management service, as part of that mix.

Microsoft and LEGO Education will also be offering a new free online Hacking STEM lesson plan, which has students use the Pythagorean Theorem to explore and measure topography in 2D/3D space.

An update to the immersive game Minecraft: Education Edition, created to engage students in chemistry through virtual experimentation and other tasks.
