The Ennis branch of Sinn Féin has endorsed Mary Lou McDonald to be the next leader of the party.

The 48-year-old politician was confirmed as the sole nominee to be the party's president following Gerry Adams' announcement in November that he would step down after 34 years in the role.

She added that Sinn Fein is "probably the most exemplary party when it comes to girl power at this stage in Irish politics" - a reference to the fact that the party in Northern Ireland is also led by a woman, Michelle O'Neill.

She was appointed Sinn Fein's deputy leader in 2009 and has represented central Dublin in the Irish parliament since 2011.

As the only person to be nominated for the position, McDonald will be formally ratified as the new leader in three week's time at a special Ard Fheis in Dublin's RDS on 10 February.

McDonald said today: "We have to grow our party, modernise and be fit for goal, but we always hold true to our vision".

She added: "I know I have big shoes to fill taking on the role from Gerry Adams and I know that is impossible but I have brought my own shoes and together, with all of the party membership, we will walk on a journey that will lead to Irish unity".

Many party members have been tweeting their support for Ms McDonald.

A Claire Byrne/Amarách poll for the TheJournal.ie asked people: "Would you be more likely to vote for Sinn Fein under the leadership of Mary Lou McDonald?"

Fiachra McGuinness, son of the late Martin McGuinness, tweeted a video message on Friday announcing that he was "proud and honoured" to endorse Ms McDonald.

Earlier, Gerry Adams said that the current political atmosphere in Northern Ireland was "toxic". "We also need to win that referendum. don't believe the naysayers and begrudgers who claim that a United Ireland is a pipe dream".
