  • 7 ethnic Rakhine killed as Myanmar police open fire at riot

Win Myat Aye, the minister of social welfare, relief and resettlement, said Burma was hosting a one-day meeting on Monday with Bangladesh officials in the capital Naypyitaw to discuss the logistics of how many Rohingya will be allowed into Burma and how they will be scrutinised to be placed in the camps.

"She (Swaraj) also reiterated India's commitment to support the rehabilitation programme to ensure sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Rakhine state", a Bangladesh High Commission statement said.

They placed 12 specific demands that include involvement of the United Nations refugee agency in the repatriation process, consulting refugee representatives, allowing refugees to identify themselves as Rohingya, and rehabilitating them in their original homes and properties with full compensation under United Nations supervision with peace-keeping force.

Many have questions whether Rohingya would return to Myanmar under the current circumstances, and whether Myanmar would accept them and allow them to live freely. "It would be worst simply moving the refugees from camps in Bangladesh to dislodgement sites in Myanmar", it said. "Hundreds of thousands of children are already living in horrific conditions, and they will face an even greater risk of disease, flooding, landslides and further displacement", Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF representative in Bangladesh, said in a statement.

"Our involvement in the process and our full access to areas of return in Myanmar can help to build confidence for all concerned, including the refugees", said Vivian Tan, UNHCR's senior regional communication officer.

The Myanmar police have filed charges against a parliament member and a writer for giving instigative talks about Rakhine sovereignty in Yathedaung, the country's western Rakhine state, Myanmar News Agency reported Thursday. "Bangladesh authorities also need to proceed with the paperwork and documents for refugees and send it to us fast".

More than 650,000 ethnic Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since August, when Myanmar's military launched a brutal crackdown in Rakhine state after a militant group attacked police posts. Anyone who fears persecution on return to Myanmar must be afforded the right to seek asylum in Bangladesh, consistent with worldwide law.

ARSA's attack on police outposts in August led to an aggressive retaliation by Myanmar's security forces.
