  • Police Officers Shot in Harrisburg

A member of the U.S. Marshals Service was shot and killed Thursday morning while serving an arrest warrant at a home in Pennsylvania's capital, officials said.

The mayor said the Harrisburg officer "bravely returned fire and critically injured the gunman".

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions also issued a statement about Hill's death, saying the officer's name should be recalled as a synonym for valor. "We will never forget you, you will live in our hearts forever", said Stacey Hill Parker.

The gunman was killed in the shootout, and Pierce was taken into custody, according to the USMS. They did not say what the relationship was between her and Sturgis. She did not appear to have a home phone listing.

The statement did not provide specifics of the charges behind the arrest warrant.

Hill and Pitts were removed from the back of the house during the confrontation after being shot.

Hill, 45, was transported to a local hospital, where he died. Pitts was undergoing surgery but was expected to recover, WHP-TV reported.

Freed, the federal prosecutor, said investigators are working to piece together the chaotic sequence of events.

The U.S. Marshals service said that the York City officer was wounded in the arm and being is treated at Hershey Medical Center. "He was the cream of the crop".

The Dauphin County District Attorney says a U.S Marshall task force was serving a warrant just after 6 AM Thursday morning when the shooting happened.

"I am in constant contact with law enforcement, and grateful for their swift action", he said.

"Harrisburg mourns the loss this morning of a US Marshal who died protecting our residents".

"They achieve these critical accomplishments at often heroic risk".

Pane said Hill was a member of a highly-trained special operations group and led a team during the manhunt for Eric Frein, who ambushed two Pennsylvania troopers at a police barracks in 2014 and then led officers on a 48-day manhunt through rugged terrain.

Police say the suspect was at his home, and neighbors reportedly heard dozens of shots fired. That man is believed to have acted alone.
