While welcomed in Israel, Trump's declaration was met with anger by Palestinians, with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas saying the United States was no longer an honest broker in peace talks and the Gaza-based terror group Hamas calling for an intifada, or violent uprising.

In a statement, the Committee called on the global community to hold an worldwide conference under the auspices of the United Nations for the assurance of the establishment of the Palestinian state with its capital as East Jerusalem. "May your house be destroyed", he said, aiming a common Arab insult at Trump.

Palestinian officials say that while they have not received a formal proposal from the USA, they have heard from Saudi interlocutors that the U.S.is exploring the possibility of offering the Palestinians a statelet in the parts of the West Bank they already control, with Israel controlling the borders, and the Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces detained six Palestinians, including five members of the same family, during pre dawn raids on Friday in the northern occupied West Bank. "To there we have to advance, with or without the Palestinians".

While Trump said at the time that the Jerusalem decision would have no impact on the final status of the contested city, he later tweeted that it had been taken "off the table" for negotiations, from which he accused the Palestinians of walking away. "On the phone? On television?"

Abbas referenced the deal and said that the Palestinian leadership had been offered Abu Dis, an East Jerusalem neighborhood they already control, as a potential capital.

He added that "the meeting will be held without a specific agenda, which strengthened the conviction by the movement's leadership that no concrete decisions will be taken". Trump threatens to cut funding to the authority because negotiations have failed.

Israel says it would welcome the United States as a mediator but a USA bid to revive negotiations, led by Trump's adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has so far shown no progress.

He singled out two individuals for particular criticism: "The American ambassador to Israel [David Friedman] and [the US Ambassador to the UN] Nikki Haley bring shame on the administration, if it has any self-respect".

The UN agency, founded in 1949 to aid Palestinian refugees, provides educational and health services in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
