'It was special': Roy registers record as England beat Australia

  • Bairstow’s opportunity at the top of the order came through Hales’ misbehaviour outside a Bristol nightclub

"We saw an innings like Jason Roy's last night that takes the game away from you", Marsh said.

Opener Jason Roy produced a superb performance with the bat as England thrashed Australia by five wickets, here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday to win the opening match of the Gillette ODI series.

Mark Wood set the tone with the sort of blistering pace that England lacked in their disastrous Ashes campaign.

Despite the late dismissals of Roy, captain Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler, England calmly secured a 1-0 lead in the five-match series in an impressive start following the 4-0 defeat in the Ashes.

Australia, who are trailing 0-1 in the five-match series, will play their second ODI against England on January 19 at the Gabba.

Having dumped Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Wade from the team in response to a pattern of middle-order failures a year ago, Australia's selectors would have been pleased by the way Finch combined with Marsh before Stoinis and Tim Paine played with verve in the closing overs.

Aaron Finch scored 107, while Marcus Stoinis (60) and Mitchell Marsh (50) added fifties as Australia posted 304-8 in Melbourne.

2 These teams can not be separated in the International Cricket Council rankings - but England are much closer to settling on a first-choice XI for next year's World Cup, with Australia turning to new players such as Andrew Tye and Jhye Richardson less than 18 months out.

"I was probably going to bowl as well, but I'm happy to bat", he said. Previous best was of 171 by Alex Hales against Pakistan at Nottingham in 2016.

With the 2019 World Cup fast approaching, Marsh admitted that this is the ideal time for players like him and fellow all-rounder Marcus Stoinis to make their presence felt.

"We will have to come up with some plans in the next game".

"That was some innings from Roy, he played spectacularly well". He finished a tough summer incredibly well and what a way to start this series!

"If a couple of batters just stayed for a little bit longer and we gave ourselves the chance to really go hard at the back end, we probably could have got up around 340 which is probably where we needed to be". That's something we've built on and got a good foundation now. "He was supported really well by Joe Root as well". We tried to peg them back and take wickets but it wasn't to be.

So comfortably then did Roy carry on, and so neatly did Root complement him with deft placement and plenty of impetus running between the wickets, that it seemed likely for a time that England might get to the total without further loss.
