In the wake of 2017's #MeToo movement, Hollywood actresses announced that they'd be wearing all black to this year's Golden Globes in protest against sexual harassment in the industry.

Winfrey's impassioned speech Sunday night at the Golden Globes sparked talk about whether she might follow in the footsteps of another wildly wealthy media star who jumped into politics by campaigning for the highest office in the land, Donald Trump.

If there was one clear victor on Sunday, it was "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", which nabbed Globes as best drama, for writer Martin McDonagh (who also directed the film), star Frances McDormand and co-star Sam Rockwell. "And some have said that night convinced him to run".

Numerous female recipients, including Nicole Kidman and Laura Dern, both of "Big Little Lies", spoke about the need for the telling of women's stories and the change those stories can bring. "I know her very well", Trump said at the White House as he met with lawmakers to discuss immigration. "But I don't think she's actively considering it at this time".

The men who won awards Sunday night largely skipped the topic altogether in their acceptance speeches, perhaps feeling that their pins and tuxes were enough.

It was lost on few that Winfrey was accepting an award named for a man who helped cement a culture of male domination in Hollywood.

Several nominees brought activists as guests, notably Meryl Streep, who walked the carpet the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Ai-jen Poo, and Michelle Williams, who was joined by #MeToo founder and civil rights activist Tarana Burke. Hollywood's awards season is seen as wide open, but the early returns Sunday were good for one of the leading nominees: the revenge black comedy "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association - which bestows the Globes - also reached a deal to allow NBC to live-stream the awards show through its own website and the NBC mobile app, available on a variety of platforms, including DirecTV Now, Fubo TV, Hulu Live TV, Sling TV, Sony PlayStation Vue and YouTube TV. "And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say "Me too" again". Kirk Douglas, 101, appearing with his daughter-in-law, Catherin Zeta-Jones, received a warm standing ovation. Allison Janney took best supporting actress in a comedy for the Tonya Harding tale "I, Tonya".

While most of the talk was about progress in the sphere of gender, actor Sterling K. Brown of TV's "This Is Us" addressed progress of a different kind: he was the first Black actor to win the Globe for best actor in a TV drama.

Hollywood stands united in black. "For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men, but their time is up". Expecting Winfrey to deliver a rousing oration is reasonable, but the level of emotional release sparked by her words felt unprecedented and necessary. Its stars Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgard and Laura Dern won for acting.

Trump himself has lavished praise on Winfrey over the years, including in 2015, when he said that he would consider her as a running mate on his Republican ticket.

"You wrote a role for a black man that can only be played by a black man", said Brown.

Tough the atmosphere was still buoyant and positive, the usually superficial red carpet had unusual exchanges.
