  • Google: We fixed Spectre and Meltdown with no performance loss

Intel processors are susceptible to both Meltdown and Spectre, so that accounts for some of the reaction.

In a statement from Intel, the company's executive VP and general manager of the Data Center Group Navin Shenoy noted that there have been reports from certain customers of higher system reboots after the installation of firmware updates.

That concern about performance loss is also important, especially since companies like Microsoft and Intel have specifically warned users about Meltdown and Spectre patches potentially slowing down systems and devices.

Now, however, Google is saying that not only did it know about the three specific Spectre and Meltdown CPU exploits, it worked to patch its own product line against a variant of Spectre that "was going to be much harder to mitigate".

On Tuesday, Nvidia issued a security bulletin regarding updates it made to its driver software to address the Meltdown CPU vulnerability that's had tech companies running scared for the last week. The news story was first reported in Wall Street Journal.

Not only did we see considerable slowdowns for many applications, we also noticed inconsistent performance, since the speed of one application could be impacted by the behavior of other applications running on the same core.

"We are working closely with them to correct an issue that paused the distribution of patches for some older AMD processors (AMD Opteron, Athlon and AMD Turion X2 Ultra families) earlier this week", Papermaster wrote". "If this requires a revised firmware update from Intel, we will distribute that update through the normal channels". The company advised end-users to continue to apply updates recommended by their system and operating system providers.

Starting off, Krzanich says that "90% of Intel CPUs introduced in the past five years" will have mitigation patches in place for the security flaws by January 15.
