  • The raid took place at the Ritz hotel in Paris at 6.30pm local time involving five raiders three of whom escaped

ARMED robbers have stolen jewellery reportedly worth about $A7 million from the five-star Ritz Hotel in Paris.

Up to five men reportedly stormed the hotel with axes at around 6:30pm local time Wednesday, with three of the raiders arrested by police soon after.

Three of the robbers were arrested after the smash-and-grab, but two remain on the run, a police official said.

Unlike the action movie, three of the five thieves were quickly caught and arrested by police the same day. Police have closed off roads in the area in search of the 2 others who are fleeing with the jewelry.

"We heard shouting and screaming from right outside the door". French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb tweeted his praise of the French authorities for the swift and professional handling of the situation.

Frédéric Beigbeder, a writer, was among guests drinking in the hotel's Hemingway bar who took refuge in the basement when the robbers burst in.

The Ritz Hotel is in Place Vendôme, a prestigious square known for its luxury retailers and hotels.

'There were initial fears that a terrorist attack was going on, but it soon became clear that it was a robbery. It was the last place Princess Diana stayed before her fatal auto crash and hosts elite guests from around the world who prize the refined neighborhood.

Place Vendome, where the Ritz is based, is also home to the Ministry of Justice, and several luxury brands, including Chanel.

In October 2016, reality television celebrity Kim Kardashian was the victim of a robbery just 10 minutes walk from the Ritz, in which millions of dollars' worth of jewelry was stolen from her.
