A crash involving multiple semis caused a massive fire on a major interstate in Indiana, The Indy Channel reports.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, the public information officer for the Versailles district of Indiana State Police, said the chain-reaction crash happened around 4:30 a.m. near the 43 mile marker. One of the trucks was carrying hazardous materials.

All homes within a half-mile of the crash were evacuated.

Wheeles says the crash injured one person.

It is unclear when those lanes will be back open. All lanes were shut down as of 8:45 a.m. Wheeles said crews responding to the cleanup faced an "explosion risk".

The initial investigation revealed that traffic was slowed in the area due to an earlier crash on I-65S. ISP says that the detour is sending traffic to US 31 south to State Road 250 and back on I-65 at mile marker 41. Work is expected to last through the late afternoon hours. ISP said they have yet to determine what if any charges will be brought against the driver that caused the crash Wednesday.

The semi caught fire around noon and became fully engulfed.

Both lanes were immediately closed and remain so as clean up continues.

The fire destroyed a vehicle from Indiana Spill Response and damaged the asphalt.

The investigation is ongoing.
