Google acquired speaker tech startup a year ago

  • Alphabet Inc.’s Google division started selling its own smartphones in 2016 so new engineering talent from Redux may help the company develop handsets with better sound

The UK Based startup called Redux is involved in developing technology that would integrate the speakers directly into the phone. Redux is the developer of an innovative technology that allows surfaces, such as smartphone displays and PC monitors, to act as speakers.

Bloomberg said a Google spokesperson declined to comment, but it's thought Alphabet could use Redux's engineering capacity to improve the quality of sound on its handsets.

Hopefully, it won't be too long until Google integrates this technology into their system, because we'll be able to have even thinner devices with bigger batteries.

The company now has 178 granted patents and more than 50 patents pending.

So far, Google doesn't seem to have integrated any of Redux's tech into its products, but if the acquisition were that recent, they wouldn't have had the time to. The acquisition could prove useful to Google, and could change the way it designed its future Pixel smartphones.

Redux shares were transferred to Google on December 13, according to United Kingdom regulatory filings, though Crunchbase said the deal took place back in August.

Redux is also developing technologies that add haptic feedback on mobile displays. It had raised $5 million in Series B funding from Arie Capital on March 22nd, 2017.

Component space is indeed at a premium now in smartphones, which is why both Google and Apple Inc. made the controversial decision to ditch the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack in the newer Pixel and iPhone models.

Google quietly acquired a United Kingdom tech startup without anyone noticing - until now that is.

This appears to be the latest in a string of takeovers from the tech conglomerate. At the CES consumer electronics conference in Las Vegas this week, Google is heavily promoting its voice-controlled speakers that compete with Amazon.com Inc.'s Echo device.
