Natural disaster in Caribbean prompts tsunami warning; no deaths reported

The Ministry of the Navy issued a tsunami warning, which was estimated to reach the coast of Quintana Roo at 23:15 hrs.

Tsunami warnings were issued for the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Caribbean islands, Central America, and Mexico. The quake struck in the sea Tuesday night about 125 miles north-northeast of Barra Patuca, Honduras, and 188 miles southwest of George Town, Cayman Islands.

The USGS said, "The Great Swan Island, Honduras natural disaster occurred as the result of strike slip faulting in the shallow crust near the boundary between the North America and Caribbean plates".

The danger escalates from a threat, to a watch, to an advisory, and to a warning.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez urged citizens to "stay calm, report emergencies and follow the instructions of authorities".

Brad was at his vacation rental in Cancun when the tremor, which is reportedly one of the largest to hit the Caribbean in modern times, shook the building.

The quake was.6 magnitude larger than the 7.0 natural disaster that devastated Haiti in 2010.

The quake was very shallow, at only 6.2 miles (10 km), which would have amplified its effect.

There were no early reports of serious damage or casualties on land after the quake struck shortly before 10 p.m. EST.
