Trump to attend the World Economic Forum at Davos

  • Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump

Yet a White House statement indicated Trump would not hesitate to bring his nationalist message to the assemblage of globalists.

Anxiety over Trump's "America First" agenda dominated conversation at the World Economic Forum past year, though the incoming US administration eschewed sending any official representatives.

Chinese President Xi Jinping used the forum in 2017 for a global call to reject trade wars and protectionism in a rebuttal to Trump.

"The president welcomes opportunities to advance his America First agenda with world leaders", Sanders said. Onetime Trump adviser Anthony Scaramucci also appeared in a panel at Davos past year.

The annual conference, to be held January 23-26, has brought together worldwide leaders of nations, business and finance at the Alpine ski resort since 1971 to discuss global cooperation.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump will use the forum to make the case for his policies to the global leaders.

Sitting presidents have rarely attended the event, held at a ski resort in the Swiss mountains, fearing its reputation for elitism may not play well politically at home.

Bill Clinton attended Davos in 2000, the only president to do so, and he has been a regular attendee since. Former Vice President Joe Biden attended past year.

Founded in 1971 by Klaus Schwab, a German economics professor, the forum has become an annual conference that includes parties, dinners and panel discussions, largely about world social and economic trends.
