The alligator's incredible ability to survive freezing temperatures

As the water froze, they left their noses up so they can breathe, a park worker is heard saying in the video.

"I looked around and I was like 'hmmm what is that poking up out of the water?' They nearly look like cypress trees a little bit from afar".

"These guys are diehard just wonderful survivors and this is just one more example of that", he said. It can be seen from online videos and pictures that the ice hardened around the gators' snouts with their bodies suspended in the water.

The Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach posted a video to Facebook and YouTube showing one of the park's rescue alligators with only its nose poking up through the ice on the surface of the water. Experts say once the alligators are able to breathe through the ice, they fall into a state of hibernation known as brumation by lowering their body temperatures and metabolism.

If the alligators didn't keep their snouts above the water surface, they'd perish in about 24 hours ― the maximum amount of time they can stay underwater without coming up for air. According to experts, it's not likely the animal will react in such a situation, at least not while the water was still frozen around it. "They are trying to conserve energy to maintain body temperature". That's why you don't see indigenous alligators north of North Carolina. They are very much alive, just waiting for warmer temperatures to break the ice.
