Har Khorana, Nobel Laureate Who Mapped Genes, Honored with Google Doodle

He was also awarded the National Medal of Science for his iconic work in the field of genetics. Taught by his father to read and write, he rose up to become a Nobel Laureate and the first person to construct an artificial gene. Dr. Khorana was awarded Noble Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1968 along with two other scientists - Robert W. Holley and Marshall W. Nirenberg "for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis". The image leads to a search for "Har Gobind Khorana" and includes the usual sharing icon to post the doodle on social pages or send via email.

Har Gobind Khorana was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan. Throughout his academic journey, Khorana encountered many mentors and advisors whom he credited with shaping his fascination with proteins and nucleic acids. He announced in 1976 that he was able to make an artificial gene function within a bacterial cell.

In 1970, he became a Professor of Biology and Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Dr Khorana married a Swiss national, Esther Elizabeth Sibler, who he credited with giving him "a sense of goal when he felt out of place everywhere and at home nowhere".

The bio reports that the couple have three children together: "Julia Elizabeth (born May 4th, 1953), Emily Anne (born October 18th, 1954), and Dave Roy (born July 26th, 1958)".

Khorana lived in many countries throughout his life.

In the starting of his career, Khorana received a scholarship to study chemistry at Punjab University in Lahore, but he was very shy to attend the mandatory admission interview which was considered majorly in English. He passed away on January 9, 2011 in MA at the age of 89.

Having graduated from the University of Punjab in India in 1945, Khorana later undertook courses at the University of Liverpool and University of Cambridge. Roger J.S. Beer supervised his research, and, in addition, looked after him diligently.

-He then went to the Swiss city of Zurich to work with Professor Vladimir Prelog for one year.
