Pence to visit Egypt, Jordan, Israel in January

  • Egypt denies 'tacit' acceptance of US Jerusalem move

The daily claimed that an Egyptian intelligence officer had placed phone calls to the hosts of several influential talk shows that instead of condemning the USA decision, they should persuade the audience to accept it. "We have enough on our plate".

"The Times" report contains allegations regarding Egypt's position on the Jerusalem issue mentioned in the so-called "audio recordings.' It is inappropriate for The New York Times, a reputable newspaper, to publish such allegations", the Egyptian government said in a statement.

The visit, now scheduled for January 19-23, had been delayed due to unrest in the region following Trump's decision to move the USA embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

SIS said Egypt's position on Jerusalem "was translated in stances and measures taken at the United Nations and other global organizations despite USA threats of aid cut". Rather, Egypt's positions are conveyed by the president, the minister of foreign affairs and in official statements as well. Kholi said in a conversation with Saeed Hassaseen, a TV talk show host and a member of the Egyptian Parliament.

Vice President Mike Pence will travel to the Middle East later this month to advance the administration's agenda of combating terrorism and helping persecuted religious minorities, the White House announced Monday. "Hamas would be reborn once more", Kholi said, according to the paper.

"The Times report claims that Capt. Ashraf al-Kholi is an officer with the Egyptian General Intelligence without presenting its readers with the slightest evidence as to the truth of this piece of information or that a person by this name exists in the first place", the SIS statement said.

In all four audio recordings obtained by the NYT, so-called officer Ashraf el-Kholi said, "How is Jerusalem different from Ramallah, really?"

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi speaks during a news conference in Cairo, Egypt, on December 11, 2017.

In response to Trump's move, Egypt publicly said the decision was a violation of global resolutions on the city's status.

Palestinian leaders were enraged with Trump's decision and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is refusing to meet with Pence.

Jerusalem's status has always been one of the main obstacles to a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. The White House decision on Jerusalem also prompted leading Muslim and Christian clerics in Egypt to refuse to meet with the vice president in Cairo. But the Palestinian leader pulled out of the meeting in protest.

On Saturday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met with Arab foreign ministers from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, the UAE and the Palestinian Authority as well as Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit to discuss seeking global recognition of eastern Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital.
