Packers hire Gutekunst as GM

  • Packers hire Gutekunst as GM

The Packers have had a busy offseason so far, with former GM Ted Thompson moving to a new role as senior advisor to football operations and coach Mike McCarthy getting a two-year extension.

The 44-year old has been the Director of Player Personnel since March 2016, but he has been with the team for 19 season in the player personnel department.

With Brian Gutekunst securing the job, only five days after it officially was open, Ball's candidacy has collapsed. NFL Network reports he was also being considered for similar jobs in Houston and was there for an interview when the Packers made their offer. The Packers had interest in Seahawks general manager John Schneider, a Green Bay native, but the team's request to interview Schneider was denied.

He spent his first 13 seasons with the Packers as a college scout.

The San Francisco 49ers previously courted Gutekunst as a general manager candidate last offseason. A promotion from within isn't surprising for Green Bay, but the team may have been interested in an outside hire before making the promotion. Green Bay just tried to pull off a home run first. That is not the case, and it's unclear if Ball will stay in his current position as vice president.
