Scores of commuters were left stranded in Koyambedu bus terminal of Chennai as an indefinite strike by the transport workers' unions in Tamil Nadu continued for the third day.

"There will be an interim order restraining the transport workers, specially, the drivers and conductors, from taking recourse to strike", the court said.

Talking to mediapersons at Karur, the transport minister said many employees had returned to duty on Saturday and expressed confidence that the rest would be back by Sunday. Workers are demanding wage increase.

He reiterated that transport corporation employees resorted to strike as they had no other option on the matter. The High Court said that the government could take action against those who have stopped work. The few buses which plied had a very few passengers while government and private buses operated from Tirunelveli to Thoothukudi and Nagercoil were overflowing with passengers in the morning.

General Secretary of DMK-backed LPF, M Shanmugam, said they were not anxious about action from the government since any protest would attract action. "We will challenge the order once we get a copy of it", said A Soundararajan, president Tamil Nadu State Transport Employees Federation and CITU leader.

Leader of opposition MK Stalin and actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan have also appealed to Chief Minister EPS to hold talks with transport workers to end the stalemate.

Further, seven unions joined the strike today, taking the number to 17, he told reporters here. Over 40 trade unions affiliated to the state transport corporations have chose to intensify the protest. The trade unions called for the strike after several rounds of talks with transport minister M.R.Vijayabhaskar failed to yield result.

Private bus operators were also finding it hard as they were not aware of the routes and where to stop.

The striking unions wanted the "factor" for revision to be fixed at 2.57 while the government insisted it be 2.44.

Police have been posted at bus depots to prevent any untoward incidents. Auto drivers were also reported to have increased the fare to three times the normal charges.
