Here's What Trump Wants in Deal to Protect Dreamers

  • Trump and Democrats Working on Deal Over Future of DACA Recipients Before Program Expires

President Trump has been speaking a lot about border security recently. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in early September announced that Trump was ending DACA and giving a gridlocked Congress until March 2018 to decide what happens to the 800,000-plus young people affected. "I have a very good relationship with Mexico".

The White House has demanded that funds to build the wall are included in any legislation meant to help DACA recipients.

"Yes, I believe Mexico will pay for the wall", Trump said. "But yes, in some form, Mexico will pay for the wall".

The No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, Illinois' Dick Durbin, who has been leading negotiations on DACA, criticized the administration's budget request for wall and border security spending.

President Trump is asking for $18 billion to fund a portion of his promised border wall in exchange for allowing hundreds of thousands of Dreamers-young immigrants brought to the United States illegally-to stay in the country, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Republicans countered that the Democrats' proposals for immigration were just as "ridiculous".

Durbin is now working with four other Senators, three of whom are Republican, on a deal that will protect DACA while also beefing up border security, but it appears Trump's demands could stall talks.

The administration asked lawmakers for $18bn in order to add 316 miles of walls and fencing along the border and bolster 407 miles of existing barriers, according to a financial blueprint sent to senators by US Customs and Border Protection on Friday.

The subject came up during a sit-down meeting with GOP lawmakers at the White House on Thursday.

Trump also said he wouldn't sign unless Congress agrees to overhaul the legal immigration system, telling reporters at Camp David that any deal must include an overhaul of the family-based immigration system, as well as an end to the Diversity Visa Lottery.

Democrats are willing to compromise on border enforcement but party leaders say they are firmly opposed to building a wall. "With this demand, he seems to be heading in that direction".
