A Special CBI Court on Saturday handed out three and half year jail term to Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was found guilty in the fodder scam case.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted by the court on December 23, 2017, in a Rs 950 crore fodder scam case.

The counsel said failure to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh each under the IPC and the PCA would entail another six months in jail for the RJD leader.

Yadav, a vocal critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was convicted in a first fodder scam case in 2013 and sentenced to five years in jail.

However, the court could not pronounce the quantum of punishment on January 5 as well and the sentencing deferred for one more day.

Lalu Prasad Yadav's advocate on Friday had filed a plea before Ranchi Special CBI Court demanding minimum punishment to the RJD Chief on health grounds.

Special CBI court judge, Shivpal Singh had acquitted six others, including former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra in the case.

The court had on December 23 convicted Lalu Prasad and 15 others in the case relating to the multi-million-rupee scam.

According to legal experts, Lalu Prasad could apply for bail immediately at the lower court itself if the quantum of sentence happens to be less than three years.

Media reports quoting the opinions of lawyers said that the veteran politician can be awarded three to seven years in prison.

Lalu Prasad is at present cooling his heels in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi. The case pertained to fraudulent withdrawal of ₹84.5 lakh from the Deoghar district (now in Jharkhand) treasury during the period 1991-94.
