  • Liverpool Star Mohamed Salah Wins African Player of the Year Award

The Egypt forward scored the goal that secured his country a place at this year's World Cup, while he has been in superb form since signing for the Reds.

Salah fended off opposition from club-mate Sadio Mane of Senegal and Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, victor in 2015, to become the first Egyptian to win the most prestigious individual honour in African football.

Salah is also the Premier League's second top scorer after netting 17 goals. Salah will miss the game through a groin injury, but Mane could well play.

"I think we have a good national team and we did very well in the Africa Cup and qualification for World Cup", he said before last night's ceremony.

The winger was also in remarkable touch for his country, scoring five goals in 10 matches to help his nation qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation. "I want to dedicate this award to all the kids in Africa and in Egypt, and to tell them to never stop dreaming and believing".

Last year Leicester's Algerian ace Riyad Mahrez won the honor, and prior to that Manchester City's Ivorian Yaya Touré was named player of the year for four successive years, from 2011 to 2014.

The award is traditionally voted for by the head coaches or technical directors of all Africa's national teams, but this is the first year CAF allowed captains of those teams to also vote. Egypt was named National Team of the Year, alongside its Argentinian manager, Hector Cuper, who was voted Coach of the Year.
