Several news organizations reported the fact, citing sources from the site of the accident.

The Egyptian Aviation Authority confirmed 19 people were injured in the crash, which took place at about 7:30 a.m. local time. Of the 12 injured, two were in a serious condition, MENA said.

The body of the deceased American tourist and the seven other injured were transferred to Luxor International Hospital.

The balloon, which was carrying 21 foreign tourists, was crashed due to bad weather and strong winds, officials said.

New Zealanders are understood to have been involved in a fatal hot air balloon crash in Egypt.

Their nationalities were not immediately clear.

Sixteen people were injured in a Luxor hot air balloon flight in 2011 as well. Nineteen foreign tourists were killed when their balloon caught fire in 2013. The service operating the hot air balloons was temporarily suspended following that incident.

The balloons, which provide spectacular views of ancient Karnak and the temples of Luxor, are now monitored by cameras and banned from flying above 2,000 metres.
