  • Afghan security forces inspect the site of a deadly bombing in Jalalabad province east of Kabul Afghanistan Dec. 31 2017

According to AFP, which quoted officials, 13 people were killed in the blast which was claimed by Daesh, adding to the carnage caused by the militant group in the Afghan capital.

"At this time a suicide bomber detonated himself among the crowd, killing and injuring dozens", Kabul police spokesperson Abdul Basir Mujahid said.

Waheed Majrooh, a spokesman for the ministry of public health, said 41 people, including four women and two children, had been killed and 84 wounded, most suffering from burns.

The sources said 30 others were wounded in the explosion.

Video journalist Rateb Noori was also in his office and said he rushed to the scene, where he witnessed one of the blasts and people trying to flee the area.

While Afghan forces backed by U.S. air strikes have claimed some success against Taliban insurgents since the United States announced a stepped up military strategy previous year, high profile attacks on civilian targets in Kabul have continued.

President Ashraf Ghani late on January 4 called the attack "inhumane" and against the tenets of Islam.

Prior to Thursday's attack, there had been at least 12 attacks on Shia targets since the start of 2016, in which nearly 700 people were killed or wounded, according to United Nations figures.

Earlier, the police said 11 people, including five police personnel, were killed.

The Sunni extremist group has recently increased its attacks against Shi'a in Afghanistan - particularly in Kabul.
