FEROCIOUS Powerful winds will send huge tidal waves crashing against Britain's coasts

An amber wind warning, valid from 19:30 GMT on Tuesday, has been issued for much of Northern Ireland.

Road users throughout the county are being advised to use caution as Storm Eleanor picks up pace.

The PSNI has issued a warning to not travel unless it is "absolutely necessary".

Paul Gundersen, Met Office chief forecaster, said: "The unsettled theme continues throughout this week, with further spells of rain moving across the United Kingdom from the west as many return to work on Tuesday and there will again be some snow over the high ground in Scotland".

The warning will see westerly winds with average speeds of 65 to 80 km/h, with gusts of at least 110 to 130 km/h expected. Indeed, several people took to Twitter to share videos and pictures of flooding in and around the Galway area.

It will remain in place until 2pm on Wednesday January 3.

Carol Halt, the agency's flood duty manager, said: "We urge people to stay safe on the coast - take extreme care on coastal paths and promenades, and don't put yourself in unnecessary danger trying to take "storm selfies".

"If you have to travel, check your route before setting off and please do not walk or drive through flood water - just 30cm can move a vehicle".

A yellow "be aware" warning has been issued by the Met Office for south-west Scotland, Lothian and Borders, Strathclyde, Central, Tayside and Fife.

Met Office chief forecaster Paul Gundersen said: "The unsettled theme continues throughout this week, with further spells of rain moving across the United Kingdom from the west as many return to work on Tuesday and there will again be some snow over the high ground in Scotland".

Storm Eleanor will bring the winds which will affect southern parts of Northern Ireland before clearing into the North Sea early on Wednesday.
