  • Medical association calls for suspension of private healthcare services across India on Tuesday

Former president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) KK Agarwal on Tuesday said that the National Medical Commission Bill, which will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha today, would open gateway for future corruption.

However, Apollo Hospital and Kalinga Hospital here haven't joined the strike, sources said.

Intending to make sure transparency, the bill also looks for to allow practitioners of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy, to practice contemporary medicine formerly they complete a short-term "bridge" course.

"There has been a good response to our strike call from private hospitals where the OPDs will remain shut for 12 hours, though a few corporate hospitals in Bengaluru like Apollo, Fortis and Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) are functioning normally", Ravindra told the media here. They argued that the move went against the interest of modern medicine. Modern medicine doctors are opposing the draft NMC Bill 2017 that was approved by the Centre last week.

Stating that the bill was not national, he said, "If the government still goes ahead and passes the bill, we will decide the further course of action". IMA is upset over the clause pertaining to the recognition of other medical qualifications in NMC Bill.

Thousands of out-patients were affected across Karnataka on Tuesday due to a private doctors' strike against a new medical bill.

IMA has four demands - One elected representative in NMC from the Registered Medical Graduates of every state and no separate registration for AYUSH. "IMA will facilitate the deployment of 65,000 fresh MBBS graduates graduating every year in Rural Health Services with appropriate working conditions and incentives", said the statement. Legitimate inspection and appropriate regulation on starting and running a Medical College.
