Fog delays flights, trains in Delhi

A thick blanket of fog engulfed the national capital and its suburbs on the New Year Day with visibility dropping to zero, hitting domestic and global operations at the Delhi airport and delaying trains departing from and arriving to Delhi.

Due to the maximum dense fog this season, the visibility of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has come down to 50 meters due to which more than 350 flying services affected on Sunday even Today also.

All domestic and worldwide flights from the Delhi airport were put on hold at about 6 this morning and they started taking off only a little before 11. Arrivals were similarly affected, with only some aircraft being able to land.

There are planes queued up at the tarmac for take-off, with the suspension of operations resulting in a massive backlog. AQI at ITO was recorded at 182 ('unhealthy' category) and Dwarka at 257 ('very unhealthy' category).




Almost all flights arriving in and departing from Delhi were affected.

The flight operations at the airport were halted for about five hours. Three hundred flights were delayed and 8 cancelled due to poor visibility.

Many tweeted photos of the overcrowded domestic terminal where passengers could be seen sitting on floors and staircases. At least 15 trains were cancelled while 56 trains were running late and 20 have been rescheduled due to fog in several parts of northern India. With 23 flights cancelled, all of which were domestic ones, according to airport an official.No take-offs could take place between 7:30 am and 9:30 am, according to an airport official.
