  • Police on Sunday arrested a man they say was found with several guns and ammunition in his Hyatt Regency hotel room downtown

An encounter between the man, who allegedly was very intoxicated, and an off-duty Houston police officer led to the bust.

Houston Police have arrested a man after finding a "small arsenal" of weapons on the top floor of a Hyatt Regency hotel in Houston.

Houston police and security went to his room to collect his belongings, where they found ammunition all over the room, local NBC affiliate KPRC reported.

The Hyatt Regency Houston said in a statement: 'The safety and security of our guests and colleagues is our top priority, and consistent with the hotel's prepared security plans, heightened measures are in place on New Year's Eve. He said his truck was parked in the hotel garage.

He was booked with trespassing and unlawfully carrying a weapon. When investigators looked into his room further, they located an AR-15, a shotgun, a handgun and lots of ammunition, Macintosh said. They're going to check his vehicle to see if there's more weapons in it.

The Hyatt Houston is in the heart of the city, and the man's room reportedly overlooked a planned New Years Eve celebration which was advertised on the hotel's website.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted that the situation was "contained" and authorities are not aware of any threats to the city.

Police are waiting to interview the man until he has sobered up, Macintosh said.
