Turkey, Russia sign S-400 missile system loan deal

  • Turkish National Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli

The proposed $2.5 billion deal "has caused concern in the West because Turkey is a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation but the Russian missile system can not be integrated into NATO's military architecture", Reuters reported.

"We have an open dialogue on this issue, and have emphasized the importance of maintaining North Atlantic Treaty Organisation interoperability on any major defense systems procurements", the United States official continued.

Reports from Ankara say Russian Federation and Turkey have signed a deal under which Russian Federation will supply its S-400 surface-to-air missile systems to Turkey.

He said that Turkey and Russian Federation have "robust and significant" defense-trade and military-sales relationship.

Several allies are also concerned as the system can not be integrated into NATO's existing military architecture.

Purchasing on ruble, Turkey will save up to 3 percent of the total debt, he said.

The head of the Russian state conglomerate Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, said earlier that Russia would supply Turkey with four batteries of S-400s for $2.5 billion under the deal.

The two countries have been working on the arms deal for around a year.

It followed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in September announcing the longtime member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation had made a down payment to Moscow for the S-400 and that he and, the Russian president, "are determined on this issue".

The S-400 is Russia's most advanced long-range anti-aircraft missile system and can carry three types of missiles capable of destroying targets, including ballistic and cruise missiles.
