  • Roy Moore who lost his bid for U.S. Senate appeared in Gallant Alabama on election day Dec. 12 2017

The state of Alabama on Thursday certified Democrat Doug Jones as the victor of this month's special Senate election after a judge denied Republican Roy Moore's effort to halt the process via a last-ditch lawsuit charging widespread voter fraud. Moore was dogged by accusations of sexual misconduct involving teenage girls that occurred decades ago. The election results will be certified at 1 p.m. CST.

"Also provided in the complaint is an affidavit from Judge Roy Moore stating that he successfully completed a polygraph test confirming the representations of misconduct made against him during the campaign are completely false", Moore's campaign said in a press release.

Moore had vocally questioned the results and filed a last-minute legal challenge of them, according to the news outlet. When CNN anchor Dana Bash noted that Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill is slated to certify the election results Thursday afternoon and not delay per Moore's request, Porter said that he and other Alabama officials could be in jeopardy.

Official election results show that Jones defeated Republican Roy Moore by 21,924 votes.

In a brief statement, Moore stood by his claims that the election was fraudulent and said he had to fight Democrats and over $50 million in opposition spending from the Washington establishment.

Minutes before the Alabama election canvassing board met to certify the result, a circuit judge in Montgomery County denied Republican Roy Moore's last-ditch request for a temporary restraining order to prevent certifying Jones as victor.

On election night, Moore had pegged his hopes on votes from military serviceman and provisional ballots. Secretary of State John Merrill said he has found no evidence of voter fraud, and he said the state canvassing board would certify Jones' victory as planned on Thursday afternoon.

More than two weeks after the special election, Moore has still not conceded the race to his opponent.

Republican Senatorial candidate Roy Moore speaks during a campaign event at Jordan's Activity Barn in Midland City, Alabama, on December 11, 2017.

As he launched his campaign, he said he saw an opening for a rare Democratic win against Moore, a polarizing figure in the state. Moore, a Republican, is an anti-LGBT, religious right extremist who was twice removed as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court - the first time for refusing to take down a Ten Commandments monument from the state courthouse, the second time for trying to block marriage equality in the state.

"This is not a Republican or Democrat issue as election integrity should matter to everyone".

Moore's lawyers pointed out in the complaint that voter turn out was higher than expected in the race, especially in Jefferson County.

President Donald Trump backed Moore in the race and held a rally to support him shortly before the election.

"I can say this".

"That is very, very frightening to think that that occurred", Merrill said, "except when you realize that there is no town or community in the state of Alabama called Bordalama".
