  • India condemns'cowardly terror attack in Kabul

President Ashraf Ghani on Thursday vehemently denounced a deadly attack on a Shiite cultural centre in Kabul.

The ISIS's local affiliate, which first appeared in eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan in early 2015, has become increasingly active and has claimed several recent suicide attacks in Kabul.

1TV News, quoting an interior ministry spokesman, said a suicide bomber was likely to have been behind the attack.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the Taliban was quick to deny involvement in the assault near the Afghan Voice Agency, a media outlet which earlier reports had suggested could have been the target.

US Ambassador to Afghanistan John R. Bass said: "The United States continues to stand with all Afghans in their pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity".

The bomb reportedly killed dozens of students after exploding near the offices of a news agency.

"Resolute Support condemns the heinous attack on the Teyban Social and Cultural Center and the Afghan Voice Agency", Faulkner said.

"The target of the attack was the Tabayan cultural centre". Since then, the IS has taken credit for at least two attacks on Shiite mosques in Kabul and one in the western city of Herat, killing scores of worshippers.

He called them attacks as against Islam and "all human values".

Interior Ministry deputy spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said at least 40 people had been killed and 30 wounded in the blast, the latest in a series to have hit media organizations in Kabul, Reuters reported. An initial blast at the entrance to the compound housing the two offices was followed by two more explosions inside the offices. Women and children were among the dead at the center, which accounted for the vast majority of the casualties.

Separately, Dawlat Abad District Gov. Mohammad Karim said a powerful mine killed six shepherd children ranging in age from 8 to 10 on Wednesday.
