That makes him second only to former president Dwight Eisenhower.

ESOBarack Obama topped the list of most admired men in the USA according to the annual Gallup poll, with President Trump coming in second, the first time since 2008 the incumbent president didn't top the list.

The survey, which polled more than 1,000 American adults from December 4 to 11, found that 17 percent of respondents most admire Obama, compared to 14 percent who most admire Trump.

Gallup notes that this poll has been administered 71 times since 1946 and the incumbent president has won 58 of those times.

The 44th president of the United States has captured Gallup's "Most Admired Man" title for the 10th year in a row.

The 2017 survey marks the 16th straight year Hillary Clinton was named the most admired woman in Gallup's poll. That means she has won the title more than any other woman, with Eleanor Roosevelt coming in second with 13 wins.

Donald Trump trailed Obama in second place for the men while Michelle Obama was close behind Clinton in second place for the women. "But the likelihood that she will continue to hold that honor in future years seems less certain, with her popularity at a nadir and the percentage naming her as most admired the lowest in 15 years", it stated.

At the same time, second-place finisher Trump's favorable rating was down to 41 percent of respondents in the Gallup poll, and he has continued to earn the lowest approval ratings of any president at this point in the job since the beginning of modern polling.

Results are based on telephone interviews conducted with a random sample of 1,049 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia.

Clinton "remains arguably more prominent than other contenders", Jones wrote in a blog post announcing the findings.

Other notable names making the top 10 include Pope Francis, Rev. Billy Graham, Oprah Winfrey and Sen.
