Former Steelers linebacker James Harrison signed a one-year contract with the Pats today, according to a source. The addition of a veteran talent like Harrison could be a stroke of genius from the Patriots this late in the season. Harrison entered free agency upon clearing waivers Monday. He visited Foxboro on Tuesday and he apparently won't be leaving without a contract.

If the Pats do indeed end up signing Harrison, it won't be much of a surprise to National Football League fans if he gets to play against his former team in the AFC Championship game should the Steelers and Patriots both win their divisional round games.

Harrison has just one sack in five games and 40 defensive snaps this season with the Steelers.

The Steelers released Harrison on Saturday to make room for offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert, who returned from his suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substance policy.

Harrison is the Steelers' all-time leader in sacks (80.5), but he lost his starting job this season as the Steelers' youth movement took over - including T.J. Watt and Bud Dupree. However, it might be hard to compete with the Patriots who have a number of Super Bowl trophies at which they can point for proof positive that Harrison's likely goal of another championship is best pursued in Foxborough. The Patriots and the Steelers now share the AFC spotlight with 12-3 records, made possible by New England's controversial, last-second win at Heinz Field on December 17. Harrison isn't a game-changer, but he can help.

Trey Flowers, Kyle Van Noy and rookie Deatrich Wise have emerged as the Patriots' top pass rushers. They chose to demote Harrison and they chose to let him go. He knows which guys are hurting and which guys have tells that the Patriots can use to their advantage. Even still, his odds of winning a Super Bowl are looking better and better with each passing day.
