Liverpool, Man City or Barça: what's coming next for Van Dijk?

  • Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been told to spend wisely in January

Barcelona has now entered the race for Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk and look to challenge Liverpool and even Chelsea for the Dutchman.

There are rumours that Manchester City and Chelsea also want him, with the clubs backed by sugar-daddy owners always willing to spend the kind of money that can blow all their rivals away, but Liverpool have to take them on this time and get Van Dijk. Current Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino confirmed that the player is on the verge of leaving St. Mary's. But Guardiola also believes that Van Dijk has all the tools in his locker to eventually establish himself as a valuable member of the first-team.

It looks like that his future might just turn into another transfer situation, as the 26-year-old has been left out of Southampton's last three games.

The Reds have mainly been linked with Virgil van Dijk and lately, we covered a report (via Sunday World) claiming that the Anfield club have agreed a payment plan to sign him from the Saints. But the new boss has simply put it down to picking the best squad.

A dominant leader at the back could have steadied the ship when Arsenal snatched a goal, but they folded like a deck of cards once more and it should have been the final trigger to sanction what would be a world record deal for a defender to get Van Dijk.

Pellegrino said: "I guess, with Virgil, there is a lot of speculation".

According to The Telegraph, Manchester City close to completing a £60 million deal to secure Van Dijk in the January transfer window. "I want to play European football again and challenge for major honours and as such I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist".
