3GPP, the working group that is developing the 5G standard for next-gen wireless communication, has ratified the first 5G specifications at a meeting in Portugal.
The specification refers to 5G NR, for "New Radio" - essentially 5G networking's equivalent to 4G "LTE".
5G wireless networks took one step closer toward reality this week as a collection of telecommunications associations officially approved the first hardware specification standards for the next-generation networks.
In particular, "5G demonstrations have been conducted based on the independent standard of each company", the official said. "As a prime contributor to 5G standardization, Ericsson has worked with industry partners in the evolution of mobile technology to a global network platform for consumers and enterprises".
However, KT evaluated that the company was leading the way in 5G global standardization by building a communication network for a tentative 5G service at Incheon worldwide Airport and in Pangyo, Gwanghwamun, Gangnam Daero, Pyeongchang, Gangneung, Bokwang and Jinbu as official telecommunication service provider for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games. Part of 3GPP Release 15, the first version of 5G will still require fallback to LTE networks for partial operation.
Deutsche Telekom CTO Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, said: "We view both the Non-Standalone and Standalone modes of New Radio as equally important for the completeness of the 5G standard specification".
"We have been contributing to the establishment of the standard of the 3GPP 5G structure by suggesting an NSA network structure in the Pyeongchang 5G SIG standard for the first time in the world", he added.
While the specs themselves won't be announced until next week, they're said to offer support for the full range of low (600MHz, 700MHz), mid-range (3.5GHz) and high-frequency, millimeter wave (50GHz) spectrum. Some brands like T-Mobile and Verizon have already started promising 5G networks which will probably start rolling out in 2018 and 2019. Following this announcement, the schedule acceleration was agreed at the 3GPP RAN Plenary Meeting in Dubrovnik, .

The slowdown in performance might convince people they need to upgrade the iPhone , instead of fixing the battery, argues Poole. The user talked about the " iPhone 6s battery fiasco" wherein the smartphone switched off even with 40% remaining battery.
The official wrote that although he signed off on the ballot, which was not counted a day earlier, he was confused at the time. In the case of a tie in a House race, state law says the victor is chosen by lot - essentially, a coin toss.
The ride-hailing company has received $4 billion in new funding from investors, increasing its valuation to $56 billion. The move is seen as posing a challenge to United States rival Uber as the Chinese company looks to expand overseas.
Google has now laid out clear guidelines for all developers who want to make apps for the Play Store moving forward. But the service was intimately tied with the Shield TV's firmware, so it never popped up in the Google Play Store .
The company argues it's a digital app and so ought to fall under lighter European Union rules for online services. Uber, per usual, insisted it's simply a company that makes an app that helps riders find drivers.
