An elderly couple there told the York County, Nebraska Sheriff's Department that some sixty pounds of pot they had in their possession was on its way to be distributed as "Christmas presents".

Authorities say Patrick Jiron, 83, and his wife, Barbara, 80, were pulled over in York, Nebraska. According to reports, deputies became suspicious and called a canine unit to the scene when they smelled a strong odor of fresh marijuana as coming from the Toyota Tacoma.

When asked, Patrick reportedly admitted that drugs were in the truck and allowed deputies to perform a search.

A December 22 updated from the York News-Times indicated Patrick was booked into the York County Jail "on charges of possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver and having no drug tax stamp". Barbara is the second defendant, and was "cited in the case but was not jailed 'due to some medical issues,'" Vrbka told the York News-Times. The York County Sheriff's Department said the street value of the haul is estimated at $336,000.

The couple were stopped when the truck was spotted crossing the center line on Interstate 80 near Bradshaw, Neb., and the driver failed to use the turn signal, Vrbka said.

Vrbka said the Jirons told authorities "they didn't know it was illegal to transport marijuana in Nebraska".

Nebraska is one of several U.S. states where marijuana remains illegal - even for medical uses. He posted 10 percent of his $100,000 bond and has been released from jail.
