  • No M'sians affected by 5.2-magnitude natural disaster in Iran

This comes as Iran is still reeling from a magnitude 7.1 quake, its deadliest in over a decade, which hit the western province of Kermanshah on November 11, killing more than 500 people and causing extensive material damage there.

Thursday's tremor hit the Kubandan region, 140 kilometers (90 miles) north of the provincial capital of Kerman, at 8:34 p.m. (1704 GMT), according to the University of Tehran's Iranian Seismological Center.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The epicentre was deemed to be at Meshkin Dasht in Alborz Province, 50 km west of the national capital.

Meanwhile, police forces, firefighters, rescue operation teams and crisis management bodies in the six quake-hit province are on alert.

Criss-crossed by several major geological fault lines, Iran is one of the world's most quake-prone countries.

According to state television, the quake was also felt in other cities.

Several strong quakes hit Kerman province on December 12, leaving dozens of people injured and damaging houses.

Iran's deadliest quake in recent years was a 6.6-magnitude tremor that struck the south-east in 2003, decimating the ancient mud-brick city of Bam and killing at least 31,000 people.

On November 12, the western province of Kermanshah was hit by a 7.3-magnitude quake that killed 620 people.
