Money raised by the Salvation Army of Walker County, which serves Walker, Winston and Marion counties, will stay at the local office to help those in need in the community throughout the next year.

"Rolanda Longoria a mother from Lincoln talked her experience about the ToyLand Drive, "I'm shopping for my five kids, um, we have been here 3 years and it really helps for families who are on the lower income of things to help make the kid Christmas a little better".

However, the Salvation Army is still half way from reaching its goal of raising $205,000 through its annual kettle campaign.

Salvation Army Rotorua lieutenant Kylie Overbye said all the donations it received meant a lot to the organisation.

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit had taken in $4.3 million out of its $7.85 million goal for the year, as of Tuesday.

The Red Kettle Campaign will end on Saturday, Dec. 23, instead of the usual Christmas Eve deadline, since Dec. 24 falls on a Sunday this year.

Beatty says they have had a few surprise donations this holiday season: seven one-hundred dollar bills folded up and two individual donations of ten-thousand dollars. "We couldn't do this without the generosity of our donors and volunteers". Text message donations may also be sending the word "Bells" to short-code 91999.

"Community is coming to the Red Kettle rescue", Wilson noted. Collectively, The Salvation Army calls it "Chico Holidays Together", a community effort to give every family in need not just toys for under the Christmas tree, but a box full of food for a holiday dinner too. "So you have joy on the person receiving and you have joy in the person giving, it's magical".
