Slow iPhone? This might be the real reason why

  • Here's the truth about how much the £999 iPhone X actually costs Apple to build

Poole plotted the kernel density of Geekbench 4 single-core scores for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 running different versions of iOS.

Geekbench data suggests that Apple may be limiting iPhone performance based on the condition of a user's battery. See, for example, the difference between the distribution of iPhone 6s scores between 10.2.1 and 11.2.0.

The slowdown in performance might convince people they need to upgrade the iPhone, instead of fixing the battery, argues Poole. The user talked about the "iPhone 6s battery fiasco" wherein the smartphone switched off even with 40% remaining battery.

It's thought that problem was a result of degraded batteries being unable to handle the iPhone's clock speeds.

But from the introduction of iOS 10.2.1 in January 2017, the data showed five peaks - the first matching the maximum performance as with iOS 10.2, but the following four at relatively set intervals showing steps downwards in performance. The graph shared by Poole, shows that under iOS 11 this fluctuation in scores is much more pronounced.

Apple's customers are spurning the iPhone X in favor of models that offer better value for money, a report says.

He found that as the batteries get older and lose capacity, their processors slow down, decreasing performance. According to Geekbench, Apple has allegedly made changes to iOS - the software that drives all its iPhones, iPads and iPods - that deliberately "limit performance" of older iPhone models "when battery condition decreases past a certain point".

"Another popular benchmarking company Futuremark - the company behind benchmarking apps like 3DMark - recently came out with its own share of findings". To fix the issue Apple resorted to reducing the performance of the devices.

Users on Reddit discovered last week that shortly after replacing the battery on an old iPhone, benchmark tests, which measure a computer's processor speed, saw a dramatic and noticeable increase in performance.

Apple has not replied to a request to comment by the time of publication.

"It appears the problem is widespread, and will only get worse as phones (and their batteries) continue to age", John Poole wrote". Geekbench also pointed out that due to this and the misconception about peak performance throughout the life of the device, users think that Apple intentionally slows down their devices as part of "planned obsolescence".
