Hundreds of people were inside the Methodist church in Quetta when two gunmen launched their attack.

Following Sunday's blast, dozens of Christians protested outside the hospital in Quetta, as well as in the northwestern city of Peshawar, urging officials to protect religious minorities.

Police guards at the church exchanged fire with the attackers before they could enter the main sanctuary, said local police chief Moazzam Jah.

"One attacker was killed at the gate by police after an intense gunfight while the other wearing suicide vest entered the church and detonated his explosives", he said. However, the second assailant managed to reach the entrance to the church where he blew himself up. Security and rescue personnel were focusing on getting medical aid to the injured as soon as possible, he added.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Security forces continue to search for suspected accomplices. "We stay united and steadfast to respond against such heinous attempts", he said. He also expressed his sympathies with the victims' families and wished for early recovery of the injured.

Hospital officials said two women were among the dead while another five women and two children were among the wounded.

Chief of the Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa also strongly condemned the terrorist attack on Quetta church.

Pakistan's Christian minority is frequently the target of extermist attacks, and the government has provided the communities' churches with armed guards.

A young girl in a white dress sobbed as she recounted the attack to television, saying many people around her were wounded. Pakistan officials deny the group has a presence in the country.

According to the church's Facebook page, it had organised different programmes all throughout December to mark Christmas, and was holding a "Sunday School Christmas Programme" at the time of the attack.

Kal Alaxander, 52, was at the church with his wife and two children when the attack happened. He, in his statement of condemnation, said anti-state elements wanted to fan unrest and anarchy in the country to achieve their nefarious designs.
