  • Facebook law enforcement takedowns quadrupled in six months because of a school shooting video

Other statistics from the Transparency Report include 21 percent increase in official requests for data, such as that of the users.

Compared to the first half of 2016, where the number of requests stood at 6,324, this is almost a 55 per cent jump for 2017.

Facebook stated the USA government made more requests that demanded confidentiality than ever before on December 18. Each of those nation's administration had more than 50 percent of solicitations in truth, with the USA (85 percent), United Kingdom (90 percent) and France (74 percent) striking for higher rates. No doubt, Pakistan Govt Request to Facebook for Restricting Content Rise Sharply.

When it comes to the kind of requests shared by the government, Facebook says that over 9,690 requests were regarding legal process with the government and these asked for access to 13,490 user accounts. For example, in the first half of 2017, we received 224,464 copyright reports about content on Facebook, 41,854 trademark reports, and 14,279 counterfeit reports.

The Government Request Report, now known as Transparency Report, updates on government requests for account data, content restrictions, and internet disruptions.

Facebook also says that 57% of the requests they got from United States law enforcement included a non-disclosure order that bans the company from telling the user that their data was requested. Facebook said it restricted access in Mexico to 20,506 instances of the video in the first half of 2017.

This is not a new trend, and it's not unique to Facebook.

In a foreword to the report, the company stated: "If a request appears to be deficient or overly broad, we push back, and will fight in court, if necessary".

According to Facebook, the majority of content restricted was alleged to violate local laws relating to defamation of religion and hate speech.

When responding to requests, the company follows guidelines that are based on its own company policy and adapted to the relevant country's laws. The non-disclosure orders climbed from 50 percent in the prior six months and 56 percent in the first half of 2016.

The social media company also took down 217,265 posts from Facebook driven by counterfeit claims, and 108,094 from Instagram.

Facebook removed 1,818,794 posts due to copyright infringement from the site in that period, and 685,996 posts from Instagram because of copyright infringement.
