  • Pierce County Sheriff's Department in Washington shows a train that derailed on a bridge over a highway

A local reporter for local NBC affiliate KING 5 News captured video footage aboard the Amtrak train that derailed in DuPont, Washington, on Monday.

"These are new, upgraded tracks - that's what is so surprising about this", said John Niles with the Coalition for Effective Transportation Alternatives, which joined local elected officials in opposing the project. Eight people were killed and more than 200 were injured when the locomotive and four of the train's seven passenger cars jumped the tracks.

"We are aware of an incident involving Amtrak train 501", the rail operator said on Twitter.

"All of a sudden, we felt this rocking and creaking noise, and it felt like we were heading down a hill", Karnes said. More than a dozen had critical or serious injuries, authorities said.

"We were coming around the corner to take the bridge over I-5 there right north of Nisqually and we went on the ground".

Conductor: "I'm still figuring that out".

Amtrak serves more than 500 destinations in 46 US states and three Canadian provinces with more than 300 trains running over 21,300 miles (34,000 km) of track every day.

"We have been told there are three casualties at this time", Bova told a news conference, adding about 100 people were transported to area hospitals. "We got cars everywhere and down onto the highway".

Chris Karnes, a local transit official who was aboard the train, told local CBS News affiliate KIRO-TV that the accident took place while it was going around a curve.

"Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements", he said, according to KOMO News.

"Emergency services are on the scene, and Amtrak management is responding".

The multi-year, state-led project cost $181 million, a released from Amtrak stated.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced it is sending a "go team" of 20 from Washington, DC, to investigate the derailment. "We are committed to taking care of them and providing the highest level of assistance possible during their time of need", the statement said.
