  • NY Health Department: Influenza prevalent in the state

Every corner of the state is dealing with a high rate of influenza, according to data from the state Department of Health.

Officials say over the last three seasons, there have been 19 pediatric influenza deaths in NY and an average of 11,183 influenza-related hospitalizations each season. "With influenza activity on the rise, I encourage anyone who hasn't gotten a flu shot to get one to help protect themselves and their loved ones".

Flu infection can create or exacerbate other health factors which are then listed as the cause of death on death certificates, for example cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or related complications, they noted. At this time a year ago, there were 42 confirmed cases and 15 hospitalizations, health officials said.

A 2014 study showed that flu vaccine reduced children's risk of flu-related pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission by 74 percent during flu seasons from 2010-2012.

Health officials are urging Delawareans to get their flu shots.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) flu experts say that flu is hard to predict, and it's still too early in our season to determine when the flu season will peak in the United States, how severe it will be, or what viruses will predominate. It is not too late to get the flu vaccine.

While there has been a lot of discussion about vaccine efficiency after an article from Australia reported only 10 percent effectiveness this year, there's more to the story than that, Lantrip said. Those 18 years of age and older may also be able to get their influenza vaccine at a local pharmacy.

"Pregnant women and their young infants are at high risk for serious complications from the flu", said Dr. Clint Koenig, medical director of the Ohio Department of Health.

People with preexisting conditions such as asthma and heart disease are also at greater risk as are individuals with weakened immune systems due to disease or medications such as chemotherapy or chronic steroid use, public health officials said.

A large, worldwide survey conducted by the CDC and several of its global health partners suggests that significantly more people than previously estimated die from influenza-related respiratory illnesses each year.

"Estimates of influenza-associated mortality are important for national and global decision making on public health priorities", the report said.

State regulations allows unvaccinated health care workers to remove their masks when accompanying patients in the community, providing speech therapy services, or communicating with persons who lip read.
