More snow is expected to hit the United Kingdom on Sunday as an amber weather warning rolls across the country.

Hundreds of schools are to stay closed for a second day.

Forecasters said snow could fall on areas of high ground and a mixture of rain and sleet is likely in most other areas.

Some roads and railways are likely to be affected, with journey times taking longer.

"There will probably be icy stretches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths with some injuries from slips trips and falls".

Pete Williams, the RAC's road safety spokesman, said that low overnight temperatures could cause black ice, and he urged motorists to drive slowly, leaving plenty of space between them and the vehicle in front.

The Met Office added: "A spell of heavy snow is likely over parts of Wales, the Midlands and parts of Northern and Eastern England on Sunday".

"A perishingly cold night is expected as we move through Monday evening into Tuesday, with another widespread and severe frost, and temperatures plummeting to below -10C across any snowfields", he said.

Birmingham City Council had to cancel all council-run school transport services on Monday as the cold snap continued.

More than 350 schools in the West Midlands and more than 300 schools in Wales have said they will shut. It is predicted that most areas within North West England will struggle to beat temperatures of freezing.

The deep freeze also left thousands without power.

Chiltern Railways, Arriva Trains Wales and Greater Anglia were reporting major delays on Tuesday morning.

It said no rail operators have announced changes to their planned Sunday services, but to check before travel.

P&O ferries are delayed by up to three hours because of the weather.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks also said they had brought power back to 48,000 homes, but there were still 2,900 customers without power - although they hoped to restore it by Monday morning.

The TUC called on employers not to force staff to make unsafe journeys "for the sake of presenteeism" and to give staff advice on what to do if the weather or lack of public transport kept them away.
