Snow expected in Valley tonight

  • Forecast Lake effect snow to end the weekend

Over the next few days some areas from MI to western NY and New England could see up to 1 foot of snow. There could be another coating to an inch of snow Monday morning, but that would be it.

The National Weather Service says winter storm watches are in effect from Monday night into Wednesday morning for the region stretching from NY southwest corner to the Vermont border. The weather service said accumulation will be most persistent Sunday afternoon.

Lake snow is slowly drifting south of Syracuse this morning and is weakening as it does so.

In terms of accumulation, the shifting bands actually work in favor of those who want to keep their shoveling to a minimum, as the snow spreads out over a larger area and puts a cap on heavier local totals. Lesser amounts, around 5 inches, are in the forecast for the Southtowns and Genesee county. More is expected with lake enhancement in the Snowbelt. ABC News meteorologists are not expecting much snow with this second system, but a dusting to 1 inch of snow is possible.

High pressure moves in by midday Monday, bringing an end to this first round of lake-effect.

The clipper system coupled with lake-effect snow that will kick up late Monday night will lead to several inches of snow across the area, especially near Lake Michigan.

Tired shovelers in Buffalo and Watertown should get a break with this round, however, as winds out of the northwest set up over the region, and steer the heaviest snow further south than the weekend's event.

In addition to the snow, the coldest air of the season is forecast Tuesday in the Great Lakes from Chicago to Detroit.

By Thursday morning, this new system will move into the mid-Atlantic states and could bring some snow from West Virginia to Maryland and into Pennsylvania, New Jersey and maybe even New York City and Long Island.

We'll be adjusting the precise timing through the weekend and early on Monday.
