Steelers to wear custom cleats honoring Ryan Shazier

  • Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier is carted off with a spinal injury

He has since undergone spinal stabilization surgery but it is still not known whether he'll be able to resume his football career or even walk again.

Doctors are controlling and limiting his movement as they wait for the swelling and bruising in his back to subside, sources said.

Shazier was injured early in game after hitting Bengals receiver Josh Malone with the crown of his helmet.

The Steelers last updated Shazier's condition on Thursday when they announced his spinal surgery. He spent Monday and Tuesday night at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center before being transferred to a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center facility.

Since he returned to Pittsburgh, Shazier has received visits from Steelers owner Art Rooney and many of his teammates, according to ESPN. He immediately fell to the turf, then turned over on his back while appearing to have trouble moving his legs.

Ryan Shazier will be on the minds and in the hearts of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. The fact that this Shazier report surfaced Sunday morning is also a little sickening and I think most of you understand where I'm going with that. He was in the midst of another superb season, registering a team-leading 89 tackles, three interceptions and two forced fumbles to go along with a fumble recovery.
