North Korea, United Nations agree to communicate regularly

  • North Korea, United Nations agree to communicate regularly

U.N. Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman returned Friday from a four-day visit to North Korea, where he met with officials including North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho.

Calling for the full implementation of all relevant Security Council resolutions, Feltman urged "a diplomatic solution to the situation, achieved through a process of honest dialogue".

North Korea regularly accuses the United Nations of bias, criticizing the United Nations sanctions resolutions that condemn Pyongyang's missile launches and nuclear tests.

"At these meetings, our side said the USA policy of hostility toward the DPRK [North Korea] and its nuclear blackmail are to blame for the current tense situation on the Korean peninsula", the report said.

Joseph Yun, the senior United States representative for North Korea Policy, speaks at a December 7 end-of-year gathering jointly organized in Washington, D.C., by the Korea Foundation and George Washington University Institute for Korean Studies.

The high-profile visit came amid increasing tensions in the region after North Korea conducted its latest ballistic missile test at the end of last month.

North Korea, which conducted its sixth and largest nuclear bomb test in September, has tested dozens of ballistic missiles under Kim Jong Un's leadership in defiance of global sanctions.

North Korea remains technically at war with its neighbor South Korea after the Korean War ended in armistice but not peace in 1953.

North Korea's state media described the drills as "joint air war exercises targeting the DPRK", a reference to North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"(Wang) noted that the situation on the Korean Peninsula is still deep in a vicious circle of demonstrating strength and confrontation, and the outlook is not optimistic", Xinhua said.

Shortly after the United Nations envoy left Pyongyang for Beijing on Saturday, North Korean media assessed the visit, highlighting the understanding between both sides and insisting that the current crisis in the region is a effect of U.S. hostility.

Despite calls from other world leaders for restraint, this year has seen US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un hurl insults at each other, both at one time saying the other was mad.

It was North Korea's first ballistic missile test since September. But according to diplomatic sources, he is scheduled to brief the UN Security Council on Tuesday afternoon in a possibly closed-door meeting.
