Many locals roads are proving extremely challenging for motorists today due to the snow and ice accumulations.

A snow and ice warning has been issued across Ireland with temperatures expected to plunge below zero overnight.

An orange weather warning has already been issued by Gardai and Met Eireann for counties in Connacht, Ulster and Leinster.

Lows of -2 are expected country-wide but temperatures could drop down to -10, with a Status Yellow Rainfall Warning is now also in place for counties Wexford, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford until 11pm on Sunday night. Heavy and persistent rain will spread from the southwest overnight and will quickly turn wintry with some large accumulations of snow across much of the province. It also urged people to avoid higher altitude areas where possible. "Coldest inland and across the north and east".




AA Roadwatch advised motorists to allow extra time to defrost cars.

The new status orange snow-ice warning is in place for Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo and began at 4pm today (Thursday December 7) and will remain in place until 6pm on Friday December 8.

Saturday in particular will see a frosty and icy start; most places will be bright and dry with sunny spells, but with some rain developing in the afternoon.
